Working in Challenging Conditions

EcoGen’s involvement with this project, which began in providing technical due diligence prior to its purchase by our client, has allowed us to demonstrate the considerable expertise we possess in the realisation of extremely challenging renewable energy projects.

Located within the grounds of a large sewage treatment works and adjacent to a nature reserve, the site contains complex above and below-ground structures and services. In some cases, investigation and inspection of these substantial structures has resulted in the removal of redundant services and the re-routing of existing ones. There were a number of complex ecological planning conditions which had to be overcome at this site. These included the need to relocate a population of Great crested newts, the removal of Japanese Knotweed, minimisation of the disturbance to wintering birds and the implementation and management of special work protocols in cable routing for the protection of water voles.

EcoGen managed the removal of hazardous material from the site (a large quantity of gas works waste), co-ordinated road closures for deliveries, works and exclusion zones during crane lifts and managed the complications around large component deliveries on both public and utility-owned road networks.

Managing complex relationships was a feature of the construction period and continues into operations - between the civil contractor, landowner, project owner and turbine supplier/O&M contractor. Key elements are balancing the needs and requirements of the utility landowner, the operational and developmental needs of their busy site and the protection of wind and other rights for the wind farm.

During construction EcoGen provided services including negotiation of turbine and civils contracts, land lease and grid connection, managing the planning condition discharges and undertaking the employer's representative role. EcoGen are contracted as Asset and Site Managers for the operational site.
